A few years ago, CARFMS asked Spin El Poeta, a Guatemalan-born former refugee now living and performing in Canada to create a spoken word piece for one of our conferences. We had asked him to examine the overlaps between the refugee experience and the historical and continuing consequences of forced displacement among Canada’s aboriginal communities. The result was very powerful (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmLpQ7uWkCU). Recently, he performed an updated version at the Toronto Poetry Slam finals, and he won! It’s a beautiful, angry piece.
