{"id":40345,"date":"2021-08-19T15:21:00","date_gmt":"2021-08-19T19:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carfms.org\/?p=40345"},"modified":"2021-08-30T13:50:51","modified_gmt":"2021-08-30T17:50:51","slug":"open-letter-on-afghan-refugee-protection-and-resettlement-to-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carfms.org\/fr\/open-letter-on-afghan-refugee-protection-and-resettlement-to-canada\/","title":{"rendered":"Open letter on Afghan refugee protection and resettlement to Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>August 19, 2021<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian Association for Refugee and Forced Migration Studies (CARFMS) observes with increasing alarm the multiplication of attacks against human rights in Afghanistan, along with the limitations of people&rsquo;s mobility and reprisals against individuals and their families. <br><br>Given its mandate, focused on refugee and forced migration issues, CARFMS supports unreservedly the \u00ab\u00a0Open letter on Afghan refugee protection and resettlement to Canada\u00a0\u00bb. This letter calls on the Government of Canada to act urgently in order to resettle 20,000 Afghans to Canada, and mobilize additional resources to support the evacuation, protection and resettlement efforts of Afghan asylum seekers and refugees (see below specific recommendations in the text of the Open letter).<br><br>Also, CARFMS encourages its members and friends to read this open letter, disseminate it to peers, and sign it: <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/5euhDWVMRoMojBEh8\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">https:\/\/forms.gle\/5euhDWVMRoMojBEh8<\/span><\/a><br><br>In solidarity,<br><br>Bruno Dupeyron, PhD<br>President, CARFMS<br><br><\/p>\n<hr>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Open letter on Afghan refugee protection and resettlement to Canada<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>August 19, 2021<\/p>\n<p><strong>Justin Trudeau, Leader, Liberal Party of Canada <\/strong><br><strong>Erin O\u2019Toole, Leader, Conservative Party of Canada <\/strong><br><strong>Yves-Fran\u00e7ois Blanchet, Leader, Bloc Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois <\/strong><br><strong>Jagmeet Singh, Leader, New Democratic Party <\/strong><br><strong>Annamie Paul, Leader, Green Party of Canada<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the deteriorating human rights situation in Afghanistan. Canada has a moral obligation to act urgently, drawing on historical precedents of innovative, large-scale refugee resettlement over 40 years.<\/p>\n<p>We call on the Canadian government to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Expedite the resettlement process for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/immigration-refugees-citizenship\/news\/2021\/08\/canada-expands-resettlement-program-to-bring-more-afghans-to-safety.html\"> 20,000 Afghans to Canada<\/a> and waive or streamline requirements given the time-sensitive nature of the current crisis. Only Government Assisted Refugees (GARs) should be counted as part of this 20,000 commitment.<\/li>\n<li>Commit to as many <u>additional<\/u> privately sponsored refugees (PSRs) from Afghanistan as sponsorship agreement holders can support and waive refugee status document requirements for PSRs.<\/li>\n<li>Immediately prioritize and urgently process applications for family reunification from Afghan-Canadians and permanent residents in Canada.<\/li>\n<li>Automatically extend all temporary visas and permits of Afghan citizens currently in Canada. Those whose refugee claims have previously been refused should be given opportunities to access permanent residence.<\/li>\n<li>Immediately evacuate those Afghans and their families who urgently require protection (including family members of people already granted protection in Canada).
